I have read a lot of Ann Rule true crime books before joining Good reads. . Ann Rule has a way of giving you all the background information, yet keeping you captivated. But it was a bit on the boring side, and definitely not a book length story. A true sociopathic character who spent his life manipulating people to one degree or another, that even his own parents didn't recognize him. But the really short last three stories were right up my alley. I like Ann Rule's writing but this dragged on, even for her. Wow, this sounds like it would have to be fiction. When the end came in a violent stand-off, the ringleader of the foursome—the fugitive dubbed "Hollywood" for his ingenious disguises and flawless getaways; the persuasive talker who turned his friends into accomplices—faced a final chapter no one could have predicted. it demonstrated that no matter how well you know someone, do you really know them?
J'adorerais l'idée de vivre dans un arbre. Brilliant. I have always loved Ann Rules books but this one with the main story about that bank robber was not up to her usual talents. His friends would help him rob the banks and he would give them a small cut. I suppose I have mixed feelings about it, but it was certainly engaging. Scotty Bowers, 94, claims he was a 'pimp' for many of Hollywood's elite during the 1940s. The Boy At the Back of the Class
Using Hollywoodquality make-up he successfully robbed 17 banks. I weirdly found myself completely taken in by Rule's recounting of the childhood and later life of the man whose plan it was to rob banks, Scott Scurlock. So this was a welcome take from Rule's usual look at murderers and serial killers. Only near the end did the writer stake a position on the lead character whose role seemed airbrushed for much of the book.Maybe he was really like that but drug dealing and bank robbery no matter how gentlemanly (when it was going well of course) are not sympathetic actions. Most of it sad but it's a real eye-opener and gives fascinatingly detailed insight into stories I've actually seen on TV. [ However, Rule mentions several conversations and incidents that show he was going to kill his helpers if he had to, and that he was already cheating them of money, keeping the lion's share of stolen bank cash for himself. I skipped over a lot of the descriptions of the cops parents history, as I didn't see the reason for it. With their stunning good looks, whip-sharp minds, athletic bodiesand no lack of women who adored themnone of them seemed slated for disaster. But few knew the reality behind the leafy screen that surrounded Seven Cedars, Scott's woodland dream homea tree house equipped with every luxury. He was nicknamed the Hollywood Bandit (or simply Hollywood).
I usually buy a book based on others reviews but I don't know how this book rated so highly. Please try your request again later. Brilliant. Fatal Friends, Deadly Neighbors: Ann Rule's Crime Files Volume 16 It is a true story about a young man who wants it all, without working for it. Scott Scurlock surely had a lifestyle to maintain, but he'd also, so far as is known, GIVEN most of his stolen money away to environmental causes. A good read overall and the author kept the pace running reasonably well though with quite a lot of padding especially with regard to the police and notably the lead detective who does not appear to have made great progress in his career as a result The story did seem to be sympathetic to some characters more than others, probably for good reason. It was different than most of Rule’s books, which were often about murderers.
