Most known for A Bigger Splash (1967), Hockney painted this painting with two other ‘splash paintings’, The Splash and A Little Splash (both 1966).
He returned there in 1964 and remained, with only intermittent trips to Europe, until 1968 when he came back to London. On returning to London later that year, he began to work on his first pool painting, Picture of a Hollywood Swimming Pool, which fetched $7.2m (£5.6m) at an auction at Sotheby's New York in November 2019.In 1966, he went back to Los Angeles and moved into an apartment in the city.
Measuring 242.5 centimetres (95.5 in) by 243.9 centimetres (96.0 in), it depicts a swimming pool beside a modern house, disturbed by a large splash of water created by an unseen figure who has apparently just jumped in from a diving board.
