Beautiful scenery. This trail traverses the Laurel Ridge from Ohiopyle to the northern end near Johnstown.
An overnight shelter area is located every eight to 10 miles along the trail. The trailhead starts out pretty muddy by the river and can be tough to navigate.
Not too difficult going up or down. It is made of crushed limestone aggregate and is enjoyed by walkers, runners, and a few children on bikes. Much easier than we expected for the first 3/4 of the trail. From Cucumber Falls, we extended the hike down to the Yough.
Got a little bit rocky on the uphill bits towards the end of the trail, we stubbed some toes a few times lol. It’s easier if you start the trail from Cucumber Falls so it’s mainly downhill on the way back to the parking lot. The 70-mile hiking trail … There was a nice clearing where there must have been some nesting birds, we saw several woodpeckers and some Acadian flycatchers. The park office is open specific hours. The portion of the trail within Ohiopyle State Park is 6.3 miles of very strenuous and rocky hiking. The trail is open for year-round hiking and backpacking. Approximately 4 hrs. The waterfall at Cucumber Falls is incredible, makes the journey well worth it. The park is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset. For newcomers, do yourself a solid and explore this trail. Me and mom were out not too long ago, and she asks me where we’re going. I was expecting it to be much busier since it was the middle of the day, but the trail was pretty quiet.Great trail. No more green blazes saying to keep going this way or that way. However, once you’re above the water a bit it clears out and you find yourself among the trees and hiking past some lovely water features. Description. Overall good hike and nice to finish with a quick dip in the river.Love this trail.
This then becomes the Great Gorge trail, designated by dark green blazes. We started from the parking lot for the LHHT, different from the starting point on the Alltrails map. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Still crossing paths with people.This is when we start realizing how much we’re going downhill, but we’re almost 2 miles in so we figure, ya know, it’s 4.8 miles, they must mean it there and back.I’m not kidding you, it was like UPHILL, it never ended. This AllTrails map is confusing.
The water levels are still very low and cucumber falls wasn’t as impressive as it usually is.
Take the metal bridge to the right over the falls. An easy fairly level hike running along and high above the river. Alternatively, you could just park at cucumber falls and start the hike from there.
Cucumber Falls is always beautiful and flowing, Ohiopyle and always beautiful no matter time of the year. Beautiful scenery!The hike was great with Cumcumber Falls just in the first half mile.
The trail is very level with no obstacles. Social distancing becomes impossible.Nice but too many people without social distancing concienceThis is one of the best trails in Western PA. hold all types of hidden gems. (I’m a sucker for Ohiopyle).
It was PACKED with people, I barely found a parking spot.

It comes out to the road that you drove in on and then crosses over.We took the little side trail to see the beautiful creek that flows(from my understanding) to Cucumber Falls.Next we came up to a creek that the bridge was no longer there and we crossed over, the rocks are slick but the water feels lovely.Everything’s good, level, flat, some downhill.
