For reasons we don’t need to go into here, the public and media alike have an unhealthy obsession with women teachers who engage in sexual activities with their students.What is entirely abhorrent when committed by male teachers is no less illegal when the perpetrator is an attractive woman in her twenties, yet some find it more palatable and even disturbingly salacious.The topic is central to American director Bob Byington’s black comedy, Frances Ferguson, which will be screened as part of the Revelation Perth International Film Festival.Thanks to the spectre of COVID-19, the decision was made to stage this year’s event virtually, rebadged as Couched, giving film buffs the chance to still see features and docos from all over the world from the comfort of their own couch.Instead of buying a ticket and attending a theatre, the public have until July 19 to rent festival films for a 24-hour period and stream the content to their TV.LA-based actor Kaley Wheless, who plays the titular sex offender in Frances Ferguson, is no stranger to shifting real-word activities online, having spent the past few months of the Californian pandemic lockdown doing film and TV auditions via Zoom.It’s not a huge departure from sending video auditions, which was commonplace well before COVID, but the halt on TV and film production is not ideal for Wheless as she looks to capitalise on her strong performance as a teacher in an unhappy marriage who is caught engaging in a one-off tryst with a high school boy.“It’s an offbeat comedy, that’s not for everybody, about a substitute teacher, who is unhappy with her life, and makes a very terrible decision in the interests of escaping a life that she doesn’t like very much,” Wheless explains.Wheless’ sardonic portrayal of Frances, which manages the rare feat of juggling nihilism and likeability, makes the audience sympathetic to the character’s plight and even identify with some of her motivations.“I feel like a lot of people come up and have been like, ‘I feel this way’ about their own lives, and feeling completely nonplussed and numb by everything at some point, you know, and that has been interesting to see.”As it happens, this is Byington’s second film about sex crimes, following his 2008 feature RSO (Registered Sex Offender), which starred the wonderful Nick Offerman, who returns in the role of narrator in Frances Ferguson.Offerman’s narration, in many ways, is a scene-stealer, picking and choosing the parts of the story to tell and exhibiting the same disregard for convention as the film’s eponymous character.Wheless says Byington didn’t set out to make a movie about a predatory teacher but society’s aforementioned obsession with the subject tipped his hand.“This was not the plot of the movie until Bob saw a New York Post article, and it was about a teacher who’d had an affair with a student, and once he’d seen that one it seemed like they were happening weekly somewhere else in America,” Wheless says.“And then he said to me, ‘They all look exactly like you’, which is not really what you want to hear.”One of the odd quirks of being an actor, when it comes to interviews, is being called upon to be an expert on whatever makes your character tick.So, since Frances Ferguson premiered at SXSM last year, Wheless has been expected to unpack the phenomenon of predatory female teachers, and why their crimes seem less inherently evil than those committed by male educators.Except in Munich, where the audience at FilmFest Munchen were, in a most German way, more interested in the specifics of US legislation and Frances’ custody arrangement with her estranged husband.“I said, ‘It depends from state to state, states have different legislatures, I can’t give you a real answer for all of this’, but it was pretty funny,” Wheless laughed.Though Wheless has given us one of cinema’s more endearing sexual predators — let’s be honest, the bar for achieving that is set pretty low — she is looking forward to playing a traditionally likeable protagonist in the future.“I’ve always kind of gravitated towards, or been asked to try, villains to some degree, so maybe doing something else would be nice,” she admits.“I’m open to anything, I most enjoy comedy, but maybe just not playing someone who is so immediately detestable from the get-go.”Revelation Perth International Film Festival’s Couched program runs until July 19.
