So don't be surprised as I was - most of the time it's not fun! Really, a very charming film. Martha, a tightly wound, anal-retentive chef ( the good ones always are), is being wooed by her assistant chef, Mario.

But their relationship has deepened in the meantime to something approaching romance and it soon becomes clear to Martha that the sous-chef Mario (played by an ebullient Sergio Castellito) is having a beneficial effect on young Lina, who likes to help out in the restaurant's kitchen. FIrst, I don't know why I thought this was a comedy or at least a romantic story.

Her boss Frida (Sibylle Canonica) forces her to take time off to care for her niece Lina (Maxime Foerste) after her sister's death in an accident. This is a truly beautiful, heart-warming film that is not without its ups-and-downs, moving gradually from down to up as the protagonist, Martha Klein (played by the excellent Martina Gedeck), takes over the care of her dead sister's daughter while holding down a demanding job as principal chef in a posh Hamburg restaurant, a difficult juggling act which becomes all the more so as a new chef of Italian origin arrives on the scene to seemingly threaten Martha's position.
But what the hell? I would recommend this seller. Loved every minute of it - even the sad parts. I noticed that practically all the reviews carried a 5 star rating hence I feel confident to give it the same rating As i saw it today and it was a sheer delight.I can compare the hollywood version as i have now seen both and and my verdict is that I prefer the original although both are thoughroghly entertaing.
