Samantha McDaniel-Ogletree, smcdaniel@myjournalcourier.comNew Berlin board members discuss issues brought to the board by the New Berlin Education Association.New Berlin board members discuss issues brought to the board by the New Berlin Education Association.New Berlin board members discuss issues brought to the board by the New Berlin Education Association.New Berlin board members discuss issues brought to the board by the New Berlin Education Association.NEW BERLIN — Members of the New Berlin Education Association lined the sidewalks leading to the New Berlin Elementary School prior to a meeting Thursday during which they presented the school board with a vote of no confidence against Superintendent Adam Ehrman.During the meeting, which was standing room only, representatives from the union addressed the board about issues they felt have been taking place since the beginning of negotiations for the 2017-2020 teacher’s contract.In a statement to the board, the association asked that Ehrman resign from his position for the good of the district and its students.Union President Joesph Kindred said the superintendent has shown a continued lack of leadership and cooperation with the union.“He has demonstrated repeatedly through his actions, and in his words, that he lacks the basic qualities and skills to lead the school district ethically, responsibly, and transparently,” Kindred said in a statement to the board.The union voted Oct. 4 to issue a no confidence vote.“The vote was taken very seriously and there have been many attempts to meet and discuss some very serious issues,” Kindred said. "I'm a union member. … As union president, we’ve worked together to solve many staff, district and student issues,” Maxson said.Others said Ehrman has shown support for both teachers and students.Kindred said the vote of no confidence wasn’t made lightly.“The New Berlin Education Association feels a responsibility to the community to protect its investment in our school district. “There are emails stressing the importance of looking into the matter.”Ehrman said a meeting to discuss the issues of intimidation was offered by the district, but the union declined.“It was offered, they said no,” Ehrman said. “It’s been a long process to address issues that ultimately have impacted our students.”In the statement read by teacher Tonya Delaney, the association cited six areas in which the group contends Ehrman has shown a lack of leadership.• Shown a lack of respect for the collective bargaining agreement process.• Lacked communication or “an ability to accept responsibility for his decisions regarding issues that negatively impact our members, as well as students in the district.”• Circulated misinformation or false information to union leaders, its members and the community.• Failed to build a working relationship with the union.• Failed to establish or implement controls for district finances after several mistakes involving paychecks, insurance deductions, taxes and health insurance premiums that were not paid.• Failed to develop procedures to ensure he and his administrative staff understand and respect federal labor laws that protect the rights of union members.Though the union issued the vote, several teachers spoke in favor of continued communication, saying the vote of no confidence was a bit hasty and they’ve always been treated kindly by administration.Stacey Maxson, a former president of the New Berlin Education Association, said she has had a respectful relationship with Ehrman.“I have confidence in Dr. Ehrman’s leadership. Dating back to May 29, 2018, Dr. Ehrman has repeatedly sent correspondence to Mr. Kindred requesting to meet in a group setting to promote transparency.
