the first muslim: the story of muhammad review

Towards the end of the project Lesley and I also became friends however geographically distant it may be.although the first chapters, revealing prophet Muhammad's life before moving to Madinah seems somewhat sympathetic, it was surely surprising when the book suddenly changed into a more distanced approach on the prophet which was extremely uncomfortable for myself. The First Muslim: The Story of MuhammadLesley Hazelton isn't just a seasoned reporter who's probed her subject like few others have, she's a elegant writer, able to craft a compelling and fluid story. This story is deep with details not only of Muhammad’s life journey, but with historic information about the culture of the times in Arabia. For him, and those like him, the bigger story is problematic; personal experience matters, so long as it's his own. I couldn't get past the suppositions Hazelton made.

As he grows and matures, he experiences a vision on Mount Hira on a dark, quiet night in 610. The author looks unbiased throughout the book. It's worth noting at the beginning of this review that my understanding of the life of Muhammad was pretty rudimentary before this book.

It is not such an easy read but a beautiful story to understand the history of Islam & how it related to other religions. First, i would like to underline her book; “The First Muslim” from her original language cause i was not sure to buy a translated book cause of her poetic speeches. I liked it because after reading the book it provides the reader with an option to either go deeper into the subject or leave it as is. Surprised how this half baked agenda / propaganda driven book has been termed as 'very well researched' by likes of Reza Aslan. but then in her approach of making the prophet more 'beliavable', it is also somewhat making him a mind too simple despite all the things he endured. In Part Three, LEADER, Hazelton takes us to the point where Muhammad enters the part of his life where he realizes the enormity of his achievement: the successes, the sadnesses, and the expectations for the future. why he left his wives and sleep alone in the mosque ? They’re baaaaaaack! But the only reasonable thing a 21st century Muslim with a critical thinking faculty can and should do is to research the unsavoury stuff for themselves. However it was a well written book and gives a general idea on the subject of Muhammad. As a muslim I found the book an excellent analysis. This book was special in the sense that it was the first account of the Prophet's life I've read through the lens of a Non Muslim writer. The First Muslim – The Story of Muhammad is a generally well-informed and certainly very readable addition to the biography literature. Post was not sent - check your email addresses! The author incorporates ideas about the importance of clan, lineage, home, retaliation, honor and faith in ancient Arabic culture, the remnants of which are influencing the Middle East today. They are the insiders, and for them, how things are is how they should be.

Having recently read Zealot, written by a non-Christian author about Jesus, I felt it was only fair that I also read The First Muslim by a non-Muslim author about Mohammed. I did not approach this book as a faithful. But when you allow yourself to start to think, for just a minute, of all the protagonists as mere humans with emotional and political biases, the whole story of Islam takes on a different feel.
