Etruscan city-states* first appeared in the 700s B.C., multiplying rapidly during the next 200 years. For a long time this was a border, toll and customs post between the Papal States and the Duchy of Tuscany. They founded city-states in northern Italy, and to the south, their influence expanded down into Latium and beyond.

Maremmana look like they've just walked off an Indian movie set- although some people claim their pedigree goes back to the Etruscans themselves. The Maremma is not just known for its Etruscan ruins, it's also well known for its cattle, known as maremmana. It must have turned a good profit for the Vatican (how else do you think they could afford to build St Peter's?) Early 20th century bungalows in Bandra, one of the suburbs of Bombay (Mumbai). The league of city-states mostly cooperated in trade and in war, although sometimes they fought each other. And still is. And this being Italy, you get some medieval history, complete with a castle, thrown in for good measure, as well as a story about food.
Need we say more?Just off the Via Aurelia, about an hour north of Rome. : Etruscan City-States The Etruscans lived in a loose group of hilltop settlements and other villages that shared a common language that was not Latin. The crucial event is the capture by Rome of Veii in 395 after a 10 year siege. Blue: expansion to the north, 700-600 BC Yellow: expansion to the south, 700-600 BC Green: Corsica, now part of France. It's an Etruscan Pompeii, complete with a city wall, roads, and foundations of temples and houses. The Castello was built in the 11th century and served to protect the bridge, which was the only bridge for miles and miles.
But Vulci was not obliterated by a volcano. And even Rome’s culture and power grew and developed at first in close connection to Etruscan history: indeed, the last three Capitoline kings – Tarquinio Prisco, Servio Tullio and Tarquinius Superbus – were Etruscan (aristocrats rebelled against the latter and overthrew him in 509 BC: thus ended the Etruscan hegemony in Rome and the Roman Republic was born).
As Rome grew stronger, the power of the Etruscans grew weaker. This part of Tuscany and Lazio is called the Maremma, which was a marshy area plagued by malaria well into the 20th century.
Whatever impetus the Etruscans may have given to the unification of the villages, they certainly provided the architectural and engineering skills that created the new buildings that made Rome into a city.

Vulci had its heyday in the 6th century BC, when it was a powerful city state, in league with several other Etruscan cities. By the 500s B.C., Etruscan colonies arose in other parts of Italy—to the north, across the Apennines, in the Po Valley, and to the south in Latium, the region in which Rome is located, and in Campania.
Some of the remains date back to this date, including a painted tomb, the Both Etruscans and Romans were keen interior decorators.

Reproduced under License 3.0 The painter equally famous... What? Veio was an important Etruscan city, whose ruins are located in the medieval village of Isola Farnese, about 15 km N-O of Rome, within the boundaries of the Regional Park of Veio. Why not?
It is famous today as the site of around 200 Etruscan tombs which were rich in artefacts and decorated with magnificent wall paintings showing lively scenes from mythology and Etruscan everyday life. But the bridge has Etruscan foundations, built upon by the Romans, and then restored in the Middle Ages... so it's probably a bit of a stretch to call it an Etruscan bridge but it does have a pedigree.
