It's always amazing to me how someone with a masterful command of the language can take the same words you and I use daily and string them together in ways that make us entertain ideas we've never thought before, remind us of feelings we've had (but couldn't describe) in the past, and clarify muddled parts of our lives.

But instead we have an extraordinary, direct-minded, publicly correct unrealistic character who just manages to encounter by accident many famous real and fictional characters.
From the opening line—"Captain Ahab was neither my first husband nor my last"—you will know that you are in the hands of a master storyteller and in the company of a fascinating woman hero. Ahab, if that name isn't familiar, is the obsessed whaleboat captain in Moby Dick.
Book is great reading. Author Naslund takes up the tale of the young wife Ahab mentions but briefly in Moby Dick. The characters are appealing, the plot is engaging (a little unbelievable at times, but I think that was intentional), and it's well-written. She survives great hardship with her noble spirit intact. These three gears of myself—body, mind, and soul—mesh here on this small island—Nantucket!

After weeks in a lifeboat, she is rescued and taken back to Nantucket aboard the Pequod with Captain Ahab. The book is a long one (nearly 700 pages, if memory serves), but it's rather engrossing. office supplies. And now I know never to name my first child Liberty or else it be doomed. Lyrical...alluring and wise. Too long, too detailed, and monotonous in tone.

As I think about it now, the title is a bit misleading.

Una's adventures begin when her mother sends her to live with her aunt, to protect her from her religious fanatic father who she is afraid will kill her as he tries to beat religion into her, his frustration exacerbated by his daughter's strong willed refusal to follow his beliefs. The book embraces the ideas of antebellum America & includes cameos by several famous people, such as Margaret Fuller & Frederick Douglass. Wild and crazed by pain, my thoughts leaped about in antic dance, circling one picture after another. However, once Big Things Happen and Una meets Ahab, I lost a little of that sense of anticipation and lost a little interest, even though I still thought the characters and plot were compelling. - without sounding preachy. Orson Scott Card did it with Women In Genesis series (women in the bible whose meager information was expanded into full length novels).

I digressI really, really disliked this book, which I feel is saying a lot. It was very easy to lose interest in her character because she moved in a predictable direction.
I did not consult Ahab about my decision to spend my pregnancy in a rough Kentucky cabin with my mother, instead of staying in the gracious home of a captain's wife on Nantucket.
